Photography isn’t JUST taking photos

I woke up to see a post from a friend that made me, in a big way, realize that photography isn’t just about taking photos. It’s about the energy , experience and relationships that are built in and around the moment. Those moments are combined 1/160th of a second at a time. At the end of the day they assemble more than just a gallery, they build friendships. Check out my friend Jen’s experience of working with complete strangers for a day.

The Day After Nemo Visited CT

SWP-Winter-CT-2013-9910

Did it suck that a blizzard dropped 38″ of snow in my town? Did it suck feeling trapped inside my house? Did it suck having to shovel out a path to the road? YES! Yes, it did.

What didn’t suck were some of the photographic opportunities that presented themselves afterward. I always try to focus on the positive (no pun intended) and find good things from any given situation. It makes life much better. I’m especially happy when that positivity comes in the form of a photograph. Here’s just a few that I took with my DSLR.

I used a Canon 5D Mark III with the 16-35mm 2.8. Most images were shot at about f11 even though the light was pretty low. Some shots were at ISO 5000+ to provide enough light for the scene. Luckily Lightroom 4 does a great job of cleaning up that noise.

Visit my Instagram for a few more shots that I took only with my iPhone 4s.

Enjoy!

Oh, Cassius Mashup – TITANIUM+BULLETPROOF

This was a fun video to shoot with Mike Falzone. My favorite shot is the; looking down on the keys shot. It wasn’t so much fun to setup, but it was totally worth it. All shot with natural daylight. The windows had a really nice natural diffusion. Check it out.

2D Photography Rube Goldberg Machine

I recall vividly, as a child, going to the library to check out the same book. I don’t recall the title, but I do remember gazing at all the drawings of contraptions, gadgets and gizmos. I hope I come across that book again someday. For now, this video fulfills my fix. It must have been a combination of excitement an frustration the whole time it was built and recorded.

The Way You Walk Away – Mike Falzone

This was a fun video I shot with @coffeegirl for @mikefalzone. Not only do I like working with Mike, but I really like his tunes. It’s fun to get them stuck in your head. Editing/Audio by Mike.

Grownup Kid

I took some photos of my friend George yesterday. Their purpose was for his passport, but I thought I’d make an attempt at turning him into a child sized adult. I doubt it could be used as a passport photo, but it was fun and challenging to do. It’d be great even if as a gag he taped this image over it. For some reason I don’t think they’d see the humor in it.

Lauren Dinardo Collection

I had the very fortunate opportunity to work with a local fashion designer from Fairfield, CT, Lauren DiNardo. Not only does Lauren have really great designs, but she is a complete sweetheart and a joy to work with. She came by the studio with a few of her latest styles and we came up with a few concepts for lighting them. There was a great energy in the studio while shooting. The models were excited about the designs and wore them beautifully.
I can’t wait to work with everyone involved again.
